WE RETURNED TO THE CAULDRON FOR lunch. Gunner’s team was still out in the field. After that, we hit a few more items on the list Graham had given me before returning to the Cauldron a second time to check in. We walked into chaos.

“Look at me!” Marissa roared from the area between the bar and the booths. I couldn’t remember the color of her original outfit—it was likely pink because she considered that her trademark color—but she was covered head to toe in mud. “You ruined my favorite sweater!”

I was smiling when I stepped up to the bar. “What happened?” I asked Tillie, who handed me a beer instead of iced tea.

“Apparently, they were taking down Swamp Thing—although they said it didn’t look as cool as on TV—and your mother accidentally tripped the line of their trap. Marissa was caught in the net with the mud beast,” Tillie replied. She didn’t look sympathetic in the least. “Marissa isn’t happy about it.”

“Obviously not.” It took everything I had to hold back my smile. “So, how was your day?” I asked Gunner, who broke away from a screeching Marissa when he saw me.

“I missed you so much.” He swooped in for a kiss. “I like a woman who isn’t afraid to get dirty.”

“That is a good quality,” Rick agreed as he looked Gunner up and down. “You don’t look as if you had the same problem as Marissa.”

“I was well clear of it when it happened,” Gunner replied. “Andrea managed to fall outward, so she avoided the mess too.” The way he delivered the news told me that Andrea likely fell away from the mess on purpose.

“Well, I guess I really am a chip off the old block,” I mused. “How frightening is that?”

“Terrifying,” Gunner replied, giving me another kiss. “How was your day?”

“Boring. Well, mostly. We took down a few Spriggans. That was mostly it.”

Rick pinned me with an “Are you kidding me” look. “You seem to be forgetting the part where we saw the apex pixie again,” he reminded me.

“Oh, well, there was that.”

Multiple heads snapped in my direction. Rooster abandoned Marissa and stepped toward me. “What did she say?” he demanded.

“She basically admitted to testing us,” I replied. “She’s pretty blasé about the whole thing.”

“She admitted to testing you,” Rick countered. “She didn’t care about the rest of us in the least.” He paused, seemingly reconsidering. “Actually, that’s not entirely true. She was interested in Evan too.”

“Not nearly as interested as she was in Scout,” Evan said as he hopped up on a stool. “I find that sad. I’m way more interesting than Scout.”

I murdered him with razor-sharp side eye. “Keep it up.”

“Did you get to see Jason Voorhees?” Gunner asked, his fingers gentle as they brushed my hair out of my face.

“Yeah, but he wasn’t the real Jason.” I was still sad about that. “He had weird gloves on, and his neck wasn’t right. He also looked as if he ate too many doughnuts. Everybody knows Jason doesn’t eat doughnuts.
